Hippology is the complete study of the horse. It covers everything from equine nutrition, diseases, genetics, anatomy & physiology, conformation and more. Hippology is an activity that can make learning fun for 4-H members by letting them exhibit their knowledge and understanding of equine science and husbandry in a friendly but competitive setting.

Hippology Contest
A hippology contest is comprised of 4 phases.
- Examination Phase: This phase may include a written exam which can cover anything related to the horse. It will also include various pictures of horse related items such as breed, color, color patterns, activity, proper appointments, etc. They are projected onto a screen and the contestants must identify the item within a specific time frame.
- Station Phase: This phase will consist of a series of stations or tables, which test the contestant's knowledge. Examples are: identification of types or parts of saddles, tack, bits, bridles, horse shoes, tools & equipment, grains & forages, internal & external parasites, blemishes & unsoundness, ages of equine teeth, pulse rate, respiration rate, temperature, signs of dehydration or anemia, measurements of wither height, shoe size, girth, collar size, gullet width or seat length of saddle.
- Judging Phase: Contestants will be required to judge at least four classes of horses. Contestants only have to place the class, oral reasons are not required.
- Team Problem: All teams will be presented with the same problem and is given 10-20 minutes to prepare a solution that is orally presented to a judge. Each team will have equal time to discuss the problem among themselves. They then will have to present an oral solution or series of suggested procedures relative to the problem.
